The Longest January: Finding Meaning in a Challenging Month
January 2025 feels longer than most. As a nation, we’re collectively weary, caught in the whirlwind of political change and uncertainty. It’s easy to feel like time is dragging—like the month won’t end. But perhaps there’s a way to find meaning and presence during this time.
As I reflect on the chaos of this month, I ask myself: How can I stay grounded when everything feels so overwhelming? With the political noise and constant shifting in the national landscape, how do we find peace and clarity in all of this?
January has always been a time of reflection for me, but this year, it feels different. The weight of the political landscape—the events surrounding new president, Donald Trump—has left many of us feeling drained. It’s as though we’re all holding our breath, waiting for the next wave of news, the next change, the next crisis.
Yet, even with this collective exhaustion, there are moments of calm. For me, the time spent with my son—quiet days at my cousin's lakeside cabin and evenings of connection—has been a source of grounding. But I can’t ignore the broader reality. As a nation, we’re all experiencing a sense of fatigue, a collective weariness that makes this January feel like it’s never going to end.
But here’s the thing: even with exhaustion and overwhelm, there’s space for peace. There’s space for presence, even when the world around us feels chaotic.
So, how do we stay centered during times of national or personal exhaustion? Here are some practices that help me maintain balance:
Lean into Quiet Moments: In times of collective stress, it’s easy to get swept up in the noise. But those quiet moments—whether it's a few minutes of breathing, a short meditation, or simply being present with the people around us—can provide a much-needed break. These moments are grounding and allow us to reset, even when everything else feels overwhelming.
Practice Gratitude During the Chaos: Gratitude may feel difficult when the world feels heavy, but it’s a powerful tool for shifting our focus. Start by acknowledging small things you’re grateful for, like a warm cup of tea or a peaceful walk outside. These moments of mindfulness can help ground you when everything else feels unsettled.
Disconnect from the Noise: This January can feel especially draining with the constant news cycle. Consider stepping back from social media and news outlets for a day or two (I logged out of all my Meta accounts for a week starting on Inauguration Day), or limit your intake to specific times during the day. Disconnecting from the noise allows us to reconnect with what truly matters, and it helps restore our mental energy.
Set Intentions for Clarity: Rather than getting caught up in rigid resolutions, set a simple intention for the year ahead. It could be something as simple as embracing calm or finding joy in small moments. This practice allows you to stay connected to your deeper values without the pressure of grand resolutions.
January 2025 may feel like a heavy, never-ending month, but it doesn’t have to define our experience. By taking small steps to stay grounded, we can navigate the chaos and find moments of peace. Even in the exhaustion, there’s an opportunity for presence and clarity.
